Employment Supports and Services Class Series - General Information

The Employment Supports and Services Class Series available through the Center for Human Development consists of 5 classes offered through generous grant funding from the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority.

National Certificate in Employment Supports (NCES) is 47.5 hours of training over a 6 week period, offered 3 times per year. NCES concentrates on practical employment strategies for people with disabilities and provides an overview of significant disabilities, practical strategies for career development, job development and job support, and rehabilitation issues/current trends. This class (or equivalent certification through bi-annual testing through ACRE) is required by the State of Alaska in order to become a Community Rehabilitation Services Provider (CRP).

Customized Employment (CE) is based upon four essential components including Discovery, Job Search Planning, Job Development and Negotiation, and Post-Employment Support. This training is 12 hours over a 2 week period, offered 2 times per year.

Self-Employment (SE) is a 4-hour training over 2 consecutive days, offered 2 times per year. This training is recommended for Community Rehab Providers seeking to add service option with the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, as well as, people with disabilities and their families. Self-employment is a recognized and viable alternative for people with disabilities who want to work.

Plans to Achieve Self Support (PASS) have been used by people with disabilities, parents, and organizational personnel for several years to provide services, equipment and training to employment seekers. The 2-hour interactive session covers Basic PASS, who is eligible, where the money comes from, what a PASS plan can buy, and who can write PASSes.

Additional training held throughout the year and on-demand include topics such as Assistive Technology in the Workplace, Work Incentives Navigation (WIN), and Work Incentives Planning and Assistance (WIPA). Training is announced through the mailing list and AKTCLMS catalog as registration is available.

Registration for each class opens approximately 1 month before the start date of each class and is advertised on the AKTCLMS registration site.
